CULLINAN

Cullinan, the world's largest rough diamond

In 1905, the world's largest rough diamond, Cullinan (3,106ct), was discovered in South Africa and presented to King Edward VII of England. At that time, Joseph Asher, who was called the world's best cut craftsman, was entrusted with the cut of "Cullinan".

On a cold February day in 1908, celebrities gathered to watch Joseph Usher break the world's largest diamond. But at that moment, it was the saw blade, not the stone, that split. A few weeks later, Joseph Asher resumed work with new tools, but restricted the room to all but the notary public. According to an urban legend told later, Joseph Asher collapsed from a mental blow after breaking "Cullinan", but in reality, he inspected the result and ran to the next room. was said to have opened the champagne with a shout of relief.

After this, the Cullinan diamond is polished to a finish worthy of being displayed as the crown jewel of the British Empire. The Cullinan transformed into nine large diamonds and multiple small diamonds. The largest, Cullinan I, became the scepter of the British royal family, while the second largest, Cullinan II, became the crown of the British Empire. Decorated.

As an aside, the white color of the wedding dress that has been established as a bridal dress was worn by Queen Victoria, the mother of Edward VII, to whom Cullinan was presented, at her wedding to her beloved husband, Prince Albert. It is said that it came to be used as a general color for bridal gowns.
