[Review] Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8

The Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 is a fascinating timepiece that pays homage to one of the most famous missions in human history.

It was announced in 2018 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 launch.

Apollo 8, launched on December 21, 1968, was the first manned mission to leave Earth's orbit, orbit the Moon, and return safely.

This great achievement laid the groundwork for the moon landing, and the symbolic photograph "Earthrise", which captures the earth rising from the moon's horizon, was the first time humans saw the earth.

This photo, which was taken by chance, has become a famous one that everyone has seen at least once.

The Apollo 8 mission was commanded by astronaut Frank Borman, with James Lovell and William Anders on board.

The mission imposed is a round trip of about 380,000 km from the earth to the moon.

A feat that seemed almost impossible at the time, its daring exploration forever changed the way we viewed our planet and the vast universe that surrounds it.

The Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 captures this historic adventure in a striking design that incorporates advanced materials and technology.

The case is made of machined black ceramic.

Not only does this watch bear the “Dark Side of the Moon” name, but it is extremely scratch resistant and offers a stealthy and sophisticated look.

Inside the watch is a hand-wound chronograph movement, caliber 1869, which is an evolution of caliber 1861.

Caliber 1861 is a prominent movement that has been used in the Speedmaster series for decades.

It is a direct descendant of the legendary Caliber 321 that powered the original Speedmaster worn by NASA astronauts on numerous manned missions such as the Apollo and Gemini programs.

This caliber 1869 is laser processed to represent a three-dimensional lunar surface.

The dial side is light gray and the back cover side is dark gray, adding a fitting homage to the Apollo 8 mission.

In particular, it is a big point that this caliber 1869 is a movement made only for Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8.

The history of the Speedmaster dates back to 1957 when it was introduced as a sports racing chronograph.

But it wasn't until 1965 that the watch attained iconic status as the "Moonwatch."

After rigorous testing by NASA, the Speedmaster was selected as the official watch of the manned space program and became the first watch worn on the moon during the Apollo 11 landing in 1969.

Since then, it has always been carried in the arms of astronauts who go into space to this day.

The Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 seamlessly blends the rich history of the Speedmaster series with the awe-inspiring story of Apollo 8.

With its black ceramic case, the intricate decoration of its dedicated movement, and its connection to the first human adventure to the Moon, this model allows you to feel close to the Moon even when you are on the ground, in your office or at home. It's a timepiece.
